There are two things to remember when you are looking to buy dolls online - firstly, there's a difference between buying antique dolls and modern dolls online.

Modern dolls such as the the Barbie collection can be easily purchased online and generally are pretty durable to be sent through postal or direct delivery means. On the other hand, antique dolls can be a bit of a challenge if you're buying them online especially as they compass a long history and different types have there own uniqueness especially in the clothing department.

In recent years, buying dolls online over platforms such as Ebay has become extremely popular and the great thing to keep in mind is that while pricing will determine overall purchase, buying online has some big advantages than going to a physical outlet and making a purchase. The emphasis is on deals and dolls deals online are big business. More importantly, you as the buyer can be in a strong position to grab a great deal especially if you're following auctions.

There are basically two types of doll enthusiasts - those who revel in the enjoyment of enjoying eras gone by with antique doll collecting and those who are more modern orientated or people buying for kids.

Buying Antique Dolls Tips

Here's a few things to keep in mind when buying an antique doll. These tips can save you a lot of frustration.

#1. Because they are older there is always a concern that they may be hiding some issues. Things to look for include cracks which can put a dampener on your purchase. Especially look for hairline cracks.

#2. If you are buying the doll physically then ask that you can remove things like the hair so you can check beneath. Always remove the body or ask the seller to do it for you. This only makes sense because when you're looking at shelling out hundreds of dollars you want to make sure your purchase isn't flawed.

#3.
Make sure the doll is original if that's what it has been advertised as. This can be difficult to check online and that's why buying through platforms such as Ebay are great in that you are protected in many areas from purchasing a dud.

#4. Also, buying the complete original doll and by complete we mean it has it's original clothing intact can be important. It depends how badly you want it but inexperienced collectors should be aware that replacing parts and clothing can be expensive. It's almost like buying new parts for a motor vehicle - they always seem to be priced over the top.

Barbie was first released by Mattel in 1959 and since the earliest Barbie doll had her hair pulled back in a Ponytail, she is referred to as the Ponytail Barbie by vintage Barbie collectors. There are six different incarnations of the Ponytail Barbie and so she is referred to by her number, i.e. #1 Ponytail Barbie or #2 Ponytail, etc. What follows is a brief guide to identifying each one as the differences between them are usually subtle, but hugely significant to value.

#1 Ponytail Barbie

The #1 Ponytail Barbie can be either blonde or brunette. More blonde dolls were made so the brunette is more valuable. Her hair is tied back in a ponytail and she has curled bangs. Her irises are white and her lips are red and she also severely arched eyebrows. Pointy, actually. She is also peering off to the side.

Constructed from heavy vinyl plastic, she has a solid torso and holes in the bottom of her feet and copper tubing in her legs so she can be fitted to her pedestal. The bottom of her right foot also says "Japan" on it.

Due to the nature of the plastic she was made from, she is usually faded to a very white color. Her original outfit consists of a black/white zebra striped swimsuit, open toed black high heels (with holes in them!), white sunglasses (blue lenses) and golden hoop earrings.

#1 Ponytail Barbie is also marked: Barbie ™ Pats. Pend. ©MCMLVIII by Mattel Inc.

#2 Ponytail Barbie

The #2 Ponytail Barbie is actually exactly the same as the #1 Barbie except she no longer has holes in her feet and no copper tubing. Her new pedestal has arms to hold her in place. She bears the same mark as above.

#3 Ponytail Barbie

#3 Barbie is like the #2 except she now has blue irises and softer eyebrows. She may have either brown or blue eyeliner.

#4 Ponytail Barbie

The #4 Barbie now comes in a new type of plastic and generally keeps her flesh-colored tone over the years. She also only comes wearing blue eyeliner.

#5 Ponytail Barbie

The big changes to the #5 Barbie are that her torso is now hollow and she bears a new mark: Barbie ® Pats. Pend. ©MCMLVIII by Mattel Inc. Note the ® instead of the ™.

In addition. #5 also is available in a new hair color, Titian. Barbie's hair is also a bit stiffer now. The Titian #5 Barbie is very hard to find and the most collectible. Unfortunately, #5 Barbies are prone to greasy faces due to some problems Mattel was having with the vinyl. A greasy appearance will reduce value as the problem isn't universal and there are some dolls still showing lovely matte faces to be found.

#6 Ponytail Barbie

#6 has a new outfit, a red jersey swimsuit and red open-toed heels. Her lips are now watermelon colored instead of red. Her fingernail polish matches her lips. The vinyl problems were fixed so she won't have a greasy face anymore either.

Is she a number 6 or number 7?

Some time in 1963, there was a major change to Barbie. The #6 dolls produced in 1963 and 1964 have broader faces and also have a different mark: Midge™/© 1962/Barbie®/© 1958/by/Mattel, Inc and they are available in different hair colors -- lemon blonde, ash blonde, titian and brunette (not raven black like the #1's). Her lips and nails are now coral.

Sometimes the Barbie with the new mark is referred to as the #7 Barbie by collectors and sometimes she is referred to as the #6. If you are considering adding one of these dolls to your collection, the important thing is to know that Barbie had a bit of a makeover between 1962 and 1963 and the 1962 doll was only manufactured for one year so she may be more collectible.

On a final note, there are lots of artists doing restorations and repaints of vintage Barbie dolls. Like any antique, any vintage Barbie that has been altered from her original condition will be far less valuable even if the repaint restores her beauty. If you are bidding on an auction for a Barbie doll and you have questions about any possible restoration work done to her, don't be afraid to question the seller.

if you would like to learn more about vintage Barbies or are looking to add to your collection, you can see some of the vintage Ponytail Barbies available on Jenni's website: http://vintagebarbies.collectiblesnook.com/

What was the doll that was like Barbie, only much smaller in scale?

I'm trying to remember a doll I had when I was a kid in the 70s. These dolls were like Barbie dolls but much smaller. The scale and heads were similar to Barbie dolls, but (if I remember correctly) they were about half the size of a Barbie. They weren't child dolls, they had long hair, make-up and were fully developed. If anyone remembers these dolls, I'd be grateful for some information.

You might be thinking of Dawn dolls.
Dawn dolls are small fashion dolls that were made by Topper between 1970 and 1973. The dolls were smaller than Barbie dolls, slightly over 6" in height.

I remember having one as a child.

Doll lovers around the world go wild when they find cheap vintage Barbie dolls. These dolls are searched for at both thrift stores and garage sales. E-bay auctions are also good places to find many of these classic dolls. Barbie dolls are known as being relatively cheap in price. They can usually be purchased new for $10-15.These dolls are not the sought after ones that collectors want. Today's modern Barbie differs greatly from the desirable vintage Barbie dolls.

To the uninitiated doll collector, one Barbie doll might appear to be the same as another. Doll experts and Barbie collectors know that this is not the case. The older Barbie dolls are made of very different materials and many of them had hand painted details. The oldest dolls will have a more solid and heavier feel. The clothing and accessories for the vintage Barbie dolls were very well made and Barbie collectors are always on the lookout for these treasured pieces. The truest vintage Barbies are those from the 1959-1972, but even those dolls made up through the early 1980s are very collectible today.

If you look at an older Barbie doll, you will notice that the earrings and necklaces were made to look like pearls and diamonds. These pieces of doll jewelry looked much like the real deal and were extremely popular when these Barbies were first being produced. Today these tiny bits of fashion accessories command very high prices. One of the reasons that the prices are high is that people were not saving and collecting Barbie dolls in the 1960s. Dolls, accessories, and jewelry pieces were discarded or vacuumed up to be thrown away. This means that only a small amount of dolls and accessories are actually around for collectors to grab. Even though there were millions of dolls made and sold at $3 each, limited numbers can be found today.

Finding cheap vintage Barbie dolls today is as much a thrill as finding a winning lottery ticket. Collectors know that most of these dolls command high prices, so when a bargain Barbie comes along they snap it up instantly. Some of these dolls have wonderful wardrobes that come complete with undergarments, gloves, nightgowns, bathing suits and prom dresses. The list of Barbie clothing pieces is staggering in number and stunning in detail and design. There are even rare clothing items that can fetch prices of $500 and up for a MIB piece. MIB stands for mint in box condition. This means that the dolls or accessories look just as they did when they were first offered for sale 40 or 50 years ago.

For collectors who hunt those elusive mint condition, cheap vintage Barbie dolls, unearthing one of them is a miracle. There are tales of some dedicated doll collectors coming up with some gems at garage and estate sales. Sometimes these vintage dolls can be bought for fewer than 10 dollars and this is a great buy indeed. While these dolls could easily be sold for a substantial profit, the collectors usually just add them to their own personal inventory. All of the older Barbies from 59-72 are becoming extremely difficult to find and collectors know this and prefer to keep them for their own enjoyment.

What vintage doll is this? 1978 Kenner...Jenny Jones??

Can someone tell me about this doll. She's shorter than barbie ,but has the hard rubber body like Barbie. Her back says 1978 Kenner Prods with a bunch of numbers and Made in Hong Kong. I think she's a Jenny Jones doll...but I want to make sure. Thank you.

#1 Ponytail Barbie is also marked: Barbie (TM) Pats.

Note the ® instead of the (TM).

The #6 dolls produced in 1963 and 1964 have broader faces and also have a different mark: Midge(TM)/© 1962/Barbie®/© 1958/by/Mattel, Inc and they are available in different hair colors -- lemon blonde, ash blonde, titian and brunette (not raven black like the #1's).

Musicals currently not touring?

I'm a junior in highschool and every year we put on a Broadway musical. It has to be off Broadway and not touring to not pay tons of money in Rights/Royalties. My teacher already knows which one we are doing...but won't tell us until after our 3 day madrigal dinner performance! Any musicals that pop in your mind??

All suggestions appreciated!!! =D

We've already done::
Oklahoma!
Annie get your gun
Guys and Dolls
Once upon a Mattress
Sound of Music
The King and I
The Music Man
Fiddler on the Roof

and a few others i can't think of @ the moment!

These are all shows that I have heard of schools doing before. Some of them are more geared to a typical high school crowd than others. For example: I wouldn't choose "Man of La Mancha" for a high school, but I've seen it done. The New York toy fair hosted the introduction of a phenomenon in 1959. This was when Barbie dolls were introduced to the world. They are still made at the present time and many millions have been sold all over the globe. Barbie doll collecting is a very popular hobby as a result and Mattel estimates that there are over 100,000 people who collect Barbie dolls. Most of these are female and are on average 40 years old. They tend to buy about 20 barbie dolls each every year.

Barbie underwent many changes in appearance over the years. The first Barbie had a ponytail hairstyle and wore a zebra striped one piece swimsuit. She was marked Made in Japan on the bottom of the right foot and had the copyright date 1958 on the back. This is the rarest Barbie and if you locate one in really nice condition it is quite valuable.

Vintage Barbie dolls are considered by collectors to be those made between 1959 and 1972. Later dolls are considered to be modern. Mattel made special edition dolls in the later years which have their own collector following. To be truly collectible these later dolls should be in mint condition in the original box. Several different label editions of these were made in varying limited quantities.

The Pink Label collectible Barbies were made with no limit to the quantity. The next level of collectible Barbies was the Silver Label edition which were limited to 50,000 dolls and distributed worldwide. Gold Label Barbie dolls were made in an edition of up to 25,000. The top tier is the Platinum Label dolls which were limited to 1000 dolls. These label edition dolls are much sought after by collectors. To be of value as a collectors doll they should be in the original box and be in mint condition.

Barbie doll collecting is popular in many countries around the world. Pre 1972 vintage Barbies are the most sought after and many are still to be found in garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores and such like places. Most people know nothing about vintage Barbie dolls or their values. As a result there are lots of them still out there waiting for the right collector to come along and find them. The thrill of the hunt can be almost obsessive and can get an avid collector out of bed to be an early bird at garage sales or flea markets. It's all worth it when that early Barbie is purchased for a song and carried home triumphantly to join her sisters in a collection.

Want to find Barbie dolls and accessories even cheaper than in garage sales? Lots of Barbie dolls, Barbie clothes and accessories are found here starting at $1 and up. Don't miss it. Check this out http://www.collectbarbiedolls.com

Am I fake?

A big pet peeve of mine is when someone calls someone they don't know very well "fake" I don't even like labels (punk emo etc) I dont fit under any of those labels so they are just not for me.

I look around in my life and I see many extremes of myself. I have cute pink baby doll shirts and really feminine things but I also like wearing dark makeup and dark clothing. I love listening to Enya and Josh Groban but yet I also love listening to hip hop on occasion. I know I shouldn't worry about what people think. Obviously I wont because I dont plan on changing myself but I just want peoples take on this.

Before you can ask, "am I fake", you must know "who you really are." Being a "fake" means that you are trying to be somebody you're not. Like if you were rich, trying to act like you were poor (or vice-versa), or if you were a girl pretending to be a guy...you're a fake.

How you describe yourself in your questions isn't being a fake. Your just an average person that have a taste for a variety of things - and that's just who you are and what you like and appreciate. You have your things you like and the things you dislike.

Don't let your peers determine for your what you should like or dislike, stick to your guns - that's being real and keep it that way. You would be fake otherwise and don't be ashamed of what you like - people will either love you or hate you for it - in anycase you will not please everybody - but make sure you please yourself.

Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts. In a series of novels published by Random House in the 1960s, her parents' names are given as George and Margaret Roberts from the fictional town of Willows, Wisconsin...

On March 9, 1959 the Barbie doll made her debut into the world and needless to say, this invariably redefined our little girls' playtime. Barbie's huge popularity has hit the fifty years mark, so that means that you can find 3 generations in a family that all adore Barbie. In as much as there has been a decline in the sales of Barbie dolls, she is still the most popular doll in the western world.

The women who played with Barbie in the childhood are the most common collectors of vintage Barbie dolls, and also go out looking for a Barbie for their girls too. They have a lot of fond memories of playing with their barbies and want their daughters to have the same too.

With all the good things said about having a Barbie doll, there main bone of contention is that Barbie is an unrealistic role model for young girls. For example, there are many girls out there who aspire to have barbies body figure, and have ended up having even eating disorders and low self esteem.

Compared to the original barbie, the Barbie doll made today has a realistic body shape that is similar to that of a real life woman. And they are also given careers that young girls can aspire to having. Some of the careers that she had had include being a pilot, a stewardess, a doctor and so on. With all the changes that the Barbie dolls have undergone over the past years, the one constant is the happiness that each Barbie has brought to little girls the world over.

I have a ton of vintage barbie clothes and accessories.. How can I identify them?

Where can I find the outfit names and numbers? I noticed a lot of people online have outfit numbers and names. I've been searching all over the net and I can only find doll identification. What I really need is clothing or outfit ID. Can you give me some websites that can help? Thanks!

I know that if they have zippers, they are way old.

I'm sure there are books on the subject. Check the library or online.

Conair Ponytailer Swirl Rhinstone (6-Pack) Conair Ponytailer Swirl Rhinstone (6-Pack)
Sale Price: $32.39

If you were to design a Barbie, what would she look like? (fashion)?

I have seen all these topics and stuff about Barbie. If you've never seen Barbie, you really need to get out more often (and look at: http://www.barbie.com/ )

The opinions are many, her breasts are too big... her neck is too long... if she's so popular, why do you need to buy her friends? Much Barbie-bashing to be had, but here's the real question for all of you.

If you were to design a Barbie doll in the here and now, Mattel came to you to design the next incarnation of the world-famous doll, and you know you would jump at the chance of that! Don't lie and say you would not do it because that's not true. What would she look like? What color hair? What would be her bodily dimensions? Would she be made out of plastic, rubber or some other materials? How long will you make her legs?

Not asking you to design the whole Barbie Universe, just Barbie herself for the new generation.

So... what you got?

this is an interesting question (=

If i were to design a Barbie, she would be shorter than the original. (same proportion of about 5"6 if she were life-size)

she would have a medium waist, which would be smaller than her hips. (equal to 27 inches)

She would have average breasts, (about 34C) and larger hips than barbie, (equal to 35 inches)

She would be more tanned than the current Barbie, but not like a stereotypical "sunbed worshiper"

She would have Red hair, something which not many people who own it appreciate it, but is beautiful.

She would have Blue eyes and feet equal to about size 6.

Her lips would be medium to large-sized, her eyes fairly large and her nose average.

Her legs would be larger than the current Barbie, still toned and fairly slim but with a little more fat around them and definately not skinny.

Barbie would be CURVY.

If Barbie were this way, perhaps all the obsession about body image and desperation to be thin would slowly diminish, so people would stop longing to be something that isn't beautiful to everyone's eyes.

Vintage Barbie dolls; Are you an expert & can you help please?

I have an old brunette bubblecut Barbie. She has some additional marks which I think might be of interest!
These are: 'Japan' on one foot
The number 18 on left buttock
Hallmark:(Right buttock) Midge 1962, Barbie 1958, by Mattel.Inc. Patented
She doesnt have bendy legs or twist n' turn waist.

I don't plan on selling it but would like somebody to help identify her for me.
Thanks x

this might help!
