Most of us who turn wood come from a woodworking background in flat work. The wood lathe opens up a new world of woodworking with new tools that have their own learning curve and the preferred way to learn is to turn simple projects. A file handle meets the basic criteria of a woodturning project for learning purposes in being inexpensive, entertaining, and useful as a finished item as well as teaching important skills in basic woodturning.

All that is needed for a file handle is a square of wood and, if desired, a scrap piece of copper pipe for a ferrule. The tools that are used are the roughing gouge to reduce the wood square to round; a parting tool to determine the finished diameters, reduce the ferrule section and part off the handle; and a spindle gouge to leave a finger groove for comfort.

A trip to the woodpile should give a suitable piece of wood for the handle. In fact, since a square of about 1 1/4" will be sufficient, a piece of ash or maple will likely supply three or four appropriate blocks. Just a few minutes at the band saw or other cutting station and the wood should be ready to go.

Mark the centres on each end mount the wood between spur center at the head stock of the wood lathe and the tail stock at the other end. Make sure the wood will clear the tool rest before turning on the lathe. There will be some discussion among wood turners as to what the appropriate speed should be, but basically the speed with which you are comfortable is a good one to use. For things this size 1200 rpm is likely good to start.

The roughing gouge is used to turn the wood to a rough cylinder. In conjunction with a measuring gauge, the parting tool is used to determine the final diameters of the butt end, hand grip, finger grip, and ferrule. Either the roughing gouge or the spindle gouge can be used to cut to the final surface but the spindle gouges will generally give a smoother texture and can be used for all the shaping or for the final cut before sanding.

The finger section gives a comfortable feel to the tool and is coved with the spindle gouge. This is the section that really emphasizes cutting with the grain and is a valuable learning place for new wood turners. Similarly the ferrule section needs precise cutting with the parting tool to precisely fit the pipe section. After a quick sanding and finish on the lathe with a bit of shellac, if desired, it can then be parted off and another one mounted.

One of the delights of a woodturning project like this is giving it away to a woodworking friend. Most commercial file handles are miserable to use and a poor fit to most hands so this is a welcome addition to any woodworker's tool kit. Also, the gratitude is usually more than sufficient to inspire the next one and the one after that. After all, in woodturning as in most other things, practise makes perfect, or at least close.

Darrell Feltmate is a juried wood turner whose web site, Around the Woods, contains detailed information about wood turning for the novice or experienced turner as well as a collection of turnings for your viewing pleasure. You too can learn to turn wood, here is the place to start. Wondering what it looks like? Follow the page links for a free video.

There are several wood turning projects fully explained on the web site. In particular, a selection of beginner's projects may be found on the Beginner's Projects page complete with explanation and step by step photos.

Plans and instructions with pictures for turning the file handle here can be found at http://aroundthewoods.com/woodturningbasics/projects/filehandle/filehandle1.html

I have a 1992 Steiff teddy bear and I want to sell him. How much and where is best to sell?

He is jointed and he growls. He has never been played with, just put in a cupboard. He is quite large about 22 inches. Is ebay the best option? Is he worth a lot of money?
Thanks because I don't know anything about Steiff bears.

It's no secret that plush toys are popular, but some of them are better liked than others. One of the most popular brands now is Webkinz. These are small plush toys, similar to many others, but they have the unique feature of coming with a 'secret code.' Going to the Website and inputting that code gives you access to their virtual world, where you can own a virtual version of your pet and interact with others. You can also buy virtual pets and virtual accessories and furniture for them. There are normal pets, wild animals, made up creatures, and mythical creatures, so there's something there for everyone.

Another very popular company for plush animals is Ty. They make the famous 'beanie baby' line, and have been doing so for a very long time. The Ty company also makes the smaller beanie babies that so many people collect, including the ones that were in McDonald's Happy Meals for some time. The company makes other lines of plush toys, too, but most people just know them for their beanie babies. They make ornaments, animals for toddlers, and many other different versions of their beanie babies, some of which have now been discontinued.

If you don't live in Germany you might not have heard of the name 'Steiff' but the company is very popular for its quality. However, that quality is expensive. While the toys have a high price tag, they are also extremely well-made and they come to you only after rigorous inspections. These are not cheaply-made toys that are put out by the hundreds for people to snap up. They are made carefully and deliberately, and they each have a trademark metal button in their ear (or elsewhere, if necessary) that identifies them as being the real thing. The company was started back in the 1800s, with the first bear actually being built in 1902. That caused the company to really take off and got it to where it is today.

For people who like to create something unique, the build-a-bear workshop might be just what they're looking for in the way of a toy. These are customizable teddy bears and other types of stuffed animals. They can be designed by people who come to the workshop, and the newest ones allow you to go online and own one in the virtual world, just like you can with the Webkinz. That has helped to make them even more popular with children and teenagers, although adults like them, as well.

Come take a look and find a great deal on a Popular Plush Toys and many other stuffed animals - great for kids and adults!

To this day, the question of who actually created the first teddy bear is still debated. Regardless of who was first, the Theodore bear became a national obsession. In 1903, Steiff produced 12,000 bears. Teddy manufacturers blossomed.   Textbook writer Seymour Eaton, under the pseudonym Paul Piper, wrote a rollicking poem called "The Roosevelt Bears" that appeared each week in newspapers around the country and followed the antics of "Teddy-B and Teddy-G".

Eaton also published a series of books about the bears. "Teddy bears are all the rage," read an ad in the 1908 Sears, Roebuck catalog.  Bears of all kinds--plaid bears, fuzzy bears, Viking bears--perch on every available surface.  How about a bear with a hood with curlers on it and fuzzy slippers and a robe? It's there too.

And today Vermont TeddyBears -Most of Vermont Teddy's customers are men sending Bear-Grams. Customized Bear-Grams can cost up to $300 apiece. Although the company specializes in lightheartedness--it ships each bear in a container complete with airholes and a delicious candy treat, in case the bear gets hungry on the trip--it's a full-size business.

Real bears have to contend with hunters and habitat loss, but there's no sign teddybears will ever be endangered. If you look through popular magazines, there's always an ad for some limited edition, and you go into a gift shop and there are  bear aprons and teddy bear mugs and teddy bears this and teddy bears that.

The Teddy Bear Museum in Naples, Florida--one of the first such museums in America--displays about five thousand teddies from all over the world. Some are holding their own teddy bears; others dress in bear jewelry and carry bear handbags. An enchanting experience for children of any age, this distinctive museum showcases bears in all shapes and sizes including one-of-a-kind teddy bears, limited editions, antique bears, and unique moving displays.

In 1997, the Huis Ten Bosch resort in Nagasaki, Japan, unveiled the Teddy Bear Kingdom--a 1,300-square-foot reproduction of a medieval stronghold with fifteen hundred classic and new bears. On April 24, 2001, J.S. International chairman Jesse Kim, who remunerated $193,477 for a one-of-a-kind existing Steiff bear at a charity auction, opened the JeJu Teddy Bear Museum in Korea. The Jeju Teddy Bear Museum opened specially for the European collectors and is more exhilarating than ever with special "Teddy Bear" entertainment.

Since the late 1970s, a generation of "bear artists" has taken tired old teddy to a new level. Art bears are nearly always hand-sewn, one-of-a-kind or limited-edition pieces. They're as diverse and creative as the artists themselves--huggable, droopy-limbed bears, minutely detailed mohair miniatures no bigger than thimbles, bears dressed as hobos, angel bears, clown bears, biblical bears, inquiring bears, shy bears, and bears of every personality, shape and expression.

How has a single toy eluded the restrictions of age, gender, nationality, culture and faith for over a hundred years? What makes people cling to their teddy bears, loved to within a millimeter of their fur, for lifetimes? The teddy bear started as a child's toy, something to comfort and please the young. That bear became a confidante, our best friend, the companion who kept us safe and sound during the trials of childhood.

Where can you purchase mohair fabric to make a teddy bear in the United States?

Where can you purchase mohair fabric to make a teddy bear in the United States, please don't say ebay or etsy, I have already looked there and I have googled also.

you can try http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com I am not sure they have the mohair fabric tho. I have made teddy bears out of Angora pelts. This is the mohair still attached to the hide. A friend gave me the pattern to these. For the Angora Pelts go to a leather goods supply house.

Steiff Classic http://dollfuss.org/steiff-classic/ http://dollfuss.org/steiff-classic/#comments Wed, 02 Dec 2009 16:41:36 +0000 DollFuss http://dollfuss.org/steiff-classic/ Is it worth buying collector Teddy bears?

I'm talking about classic collector Teddy bears, and limited editions that are available, from companies such as Steiff and Hermann.

Yes. Steiff and Hermann seem to never lose their value. The larger the bear the more they are worth. I am trying to find a 26" or larger Seiff for under $500 and I haven't found one yet!

Just about everybody had a treasured stuffed toy when they were young. The feeling of happiness and nostalgia of these toys is what makes some adults become collectors of them, namely stuffed animals from Steiff. They are in high demand by collectors when available at fairs and auctions, namely stuffed bears. The legend of Steiff stuffed animals started sometime in 1880 in Germany, in the town of Giengen an der Brenz. Margarete Steiff, a wheelchair bound seamstress, made toy animals from her own designs as a hobby.

They were mostly of dogs, cats, pigs and elephants. Stuffed animals that we know of today began when Richard Steiff, a nephew of Margarette, created the first toy bear with jointed limbs in 1902. This bear with jointed limbs became popular worldwide, and as a result, it was the winner at the World Exhibition that was held in 1094 in St. Louis. It was later named after President Teddy Roosevelt and became known as the teddy bear. The company is known for its high quality creations, which are still made in the town of Giengen. The town of Giengen is considered a mecca for lovers of stuffed animals, and visitors can experience an Adventure Museum as well as the Steiff factory. The museum tells the history of the products and a gift shop sells bears, replicas of past animal products, historic catalogues and porcelain.

The Steiff Classic range is the line that is most sought after by collectors, featuring a wide variety of animals that are all hand made. A majority of the creations date back to the early 1900's up to the 1920's. There is also a bear with a stitched on Valentine's heart, which makes a romantic gift. The range also includes characters from the Beatrix Potter stories, including Peter Rabbit and the Mrs. Tiggy Winkle hedgehog. Another children's favorite that is available is the Paddington Bear, with his trademark blue hat and red duffle coat. The majority of Steiff baby animals are created with babies and toddlers in mind. Teddy bears, kittens and puppies are included in this collection that is designed from durable, high quality materials.

The Cosy Animal line has machine washable animals and there are also children's clothes, keyrings, bags and gift sets. Another great collection is the Steiff Limited Edition selection that showcases a pink and grey replica of the world famous 1908 teddy bear. You can also find a Moon Bear, a Grizzly Bear and a cute Pierrot Bear in the selection. Another one of my favorites in this range is the famous character from story books, the Rupert Bear. However, the teddy bear will continue to be the toy that is most associated with the company.

There are all kinds of collectors in the world with different reasons for collecting.  Two very popular collectibles that often get lumped together are dolls and Teddy bears.

Perhaps their popularity as collectibles is due to the fact that they both have roots deep in childhood or maybe it is because they both have very impressive potential to increase in value.  Regardless, they are both collected and cared for by people who treasure them deeply.  Not all of the dolls and bears that are sold today will be worth much in the future.  Many will not have much inherent collectible value to begin with and others will quickly lose their value as they are played with and damaged by normal wear and tear.

Among dolls, the vintage ones are often the most valuable.  Brands like Barbie and Madame Alexander are well known and documented, but other, less talked about names are also quite valuable.  Shirley Temple dolls can fetch impressive numbers at auction and new ones are still being produced today, even though the original craze for them started all the way back in the 1930s.  Strawberry Shortcake dolls which had their day in the sun during the early 1980s now can bring hundreds of dollars online.  Of course there are many other dolls that have just as much collectible value.  These are only two examples.

Teddy bears are another childhood favorite that some people do not recognize their collectible value until they take a closer look.  Older bears from companies like Bing and Steiff  were some of the first Teddy bears ever produced back before 1910.  They can easily bring hundreds of dollars when put up for sale.

Whatever your reason is for collecting, for money or just for fun, you can learn a lot about the hobby and enjoy yourself while you are doing it.  If you are lucky or decide to work at it, you might even make yourself some money.

Becky likes to collect vintage dolls and has been growing her collection of Steiff bears since she was a little girl.

Fairy Tales for the 90's Fairy Tales for the 90's
Sale Price: $1.99

Steiff Bears have been around since the turn of the century and right from the off they have always been very popular due to their quality and detail.

Steiff recently launched ranges such as Steiff Animals and My First Steiff and they have been hugely popular. In fact some of them are so popular they are difficult to get hold of such as My First Steiff in Pink sold out very quickly and isn't due back in stock at Steiff until around September time.

Some new Steiff Bears coming out in the last quarter of 2009 include Pudsey Bear which is obviously aimed at raising money for Children in Need. Steiff themselves will donate £15 and the retailer will also donate £15. There is also a limited edition Black Rabbit from Beatrix Potter which will retail at around £145.

A range of Steiff Bears that will make ideal birthday gifts are the Teddy Bear Month range i.e. Teddy Bear January. Obviously you buy someone a teddy based on the month that person was born.

An interesting range of Steiff is the click-a-bear where you have to build the bear yourself. These retail at about £16.

The Steiff Animals range includes Manschli Panda, Hoppel Rabbit and Linda Lamb and are again very popular and make ideal gifts for birthdays.

My interest in Steiff Bears started a few years ago on a trip to London. We saw them initially in Harrods, where there is a fantastic display of Steiff toys and then in Hamleys which is a must visit for anyone with kids.

If you want to buy Steiff Bears online try my online gift site.
