When I was growing up in the south-east of England, the most desirable toy for most boys and some girls was a Dinky Toy - 1/43rd scale diecast model cars. I started to collect them in the late 1950s. At that time most Dinky Toy cars were 2/6d (Two shillings and six pence - about 25 cents in US money) and they came in a distinctive yellow box. They had actually been around since the early 1930s originally called "Modelled Miniatures" and intended mainly for use around train sets, the BIG boys' toy of the time, but they took on a life of their own and were manufactured in both England and France for many years.

For me their heyday was the fifties and sixties. Compared to today's top of the range diecast cars, they were, let's admit, pretty basic. No windows, no interiors, no 'suspension', no steering, but to me they were the most prized and sought after toy of all!

With television in its infancy in the fifties in the UK and much of the programming being bought from America, the appeal of flashy American cars seen in cop shows and films, as opposed to the rather more staid Hillmans and Austins of the UK was reflected in the choice of Dinky Toys I would spend my hard-earned pocket money on.

The Dinky Toys Dodge Royal, the Plymouth Plaza, the Hudson Commodore were all cars that any self-respecting boy had to own! But there were other models that were also a must - the Observation Coach (bus) for example, with its weird looking upper deck was a favorite of mine.

Gradually Dinky Toys added new features, under competition from other makes, like Corgi Toys. First were plastic windows, then gradually seats were put in, 'independent suspension' for all four wheels became all the rage , and finally steering. All these new features were seized upon with glee by me and my friends!

But the days of the Dinky Toy were numbered and in the seventies the end was near, brought on partly by competition from the new Hot Wheels, and although several attempts were made by new owners to revive the famous Dinky Toys name, they are now long since defunct.

Collectors though still seek out the toys and a good mint condition toy, preferably with mint condition box, can change hands for enormous sums. Dinky Toys, even in play-worn condition, are one of the best sellers on eBay.

I will never have a full collection - some are so rare that if one ever surfaces it will be way beyond my pocket, but I will always be on the lookout for a good condition Dinky.

HELP! VINTAGE 1980's TOY THAT NEEDS TO BE IDENTIFIED! details inside?

I recently went to a grage sale and bought an adorable dog plush toy for a little kid. The tag says Mattel Inc. 1985, but otherwise, I cannot identify the name of this dog. He is a brown dog with large, dark brown ears. He has a little pink heart sewn onto his chest, right where his heart would be. He has a battery pack inside his head, and there are button inside both ears, both arms, his tail and both feet. Whe you press either the tail or either ear, he says "Ow! It hurts, it hurts!". When you press his feet he begins to laugh and says "HeeHeeHee This tickles!" and when you press his hand he says "I'm a good buddy (or bunny, its unclear), I'm you huggy"
I have searched everywhere online for some clue as to what this dog is. If you have any idea, please let me know! I will post a picture soon.

What are good toys for a 10 month old baby boy for Christmas?

My twins will be 10 months on the 26th and I don't have a clue what to get them. They really haven't had any toys since their birth besides things like keys, rattles, soft plush toys and a few larger toys and their walkers. I don't know what to get them since they'll only be 10 months old and their birthday is right around the corner also. I'm just looking for something basic and fun for them. I've been looking at the Fisher Price website and other baby toy websites but I still am clueless. So far I'm thinking blocks, push toys, play phones (so they'll leave my cell alone!) and toy trucks. Any suggestions are very well appreciated! Thanks!

Where can I buy a neon green shark stuffed animal?

I am looking for a neon green shark stuffed animal / plush toy. My little brother saw one in one of those claw machines that you can (attempt) to pick up a stuffed animal. And needless to say, it's impossible to get. So I've been looking on the internet and can't seem to find one. If anyone knows where to find one that would be awesome. Oh and it needs to have an open mouth with teeth showing... I know that's a lot to ask for, so thank you in advance.

I've seen those at carnivals and fairs (if you tip the guy who runs it, he might give it to you for free). Try an amusement park. If not that, they usually have stuff like that at aquarium gift shops. Maybe try those?

In 1898 Adolph Gund, a German immigrant founded a toy and novelty company in Norwalk, Connecticut. The company named for its founder, Gund, would later become one of the notable pioneers in the global soft and plush toy industry. In 1925 when Gund retired he sold the company to one of his employees, Jacob Swedlin who had apprenticed under him for close to thirty years. Mr. Gund had one stipulation as a part of the sale, that the company retain his name. Since then the company and all the products have been under the well recognized name, Gund.

Sweldin continued the tradition of establishing Gund as an innovative leader in the soft toy industry. He led the way in the marketing technique of licensing cartoon characters for soft toy production. He was able to obtain licenses to produce plush toys of the well known characters of Popeye, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat. As a leader in safety, gund worked on ways to secure plush toy's parts to prevent the potential hazard of loose parts.

After his reign at the helm ended, Swedlin transferred ownership to his daughter and son in law, Rita and Herbert Raiffe. For those of us who have kids or know children, it certainly seems like toys and the idea of play has changed. Children's entertainment has taken on a much more passive role, when in our day play was all about imagination and creativity. For example, we'd play dress up or various role playing games, and we'd use the toys we did have in completely creative, loosely structured fun. Nowadays it seems that traditional play where you create a story has been left behind, what with video games and other passive entertainments.

Of course, I don't mean to sound like an old fogey by belittling a new generation of toys, but it's hard to disagree with the importance of active play for a child's development. In fact, classic toys and games are still very much the basis for learning and growing. They can have the occasional video game, but make sure to also include, especially when they are very young, these classic toys for development. Remember, playing is as important as outright learning, such as learning a new language and engaging in sports, and can really help our children excel.

Below I will explain why "play" is so important for development.

1. Play can be a precursor to important socialization skills that children learn through sports. Here they learn how to be part of a team, be disciplined, and learn about competitiveness. Leading an active life before they are old enough to play organized sports can begin this process. These basic activities include things such as running outside, playing hide and seek, or playing hopscotch. Healthy bodies help create healthy minds, so we should never underestimate the power of physical activity, even if it does just look like "play."

2. Play is also very important when it comes to the development of creativity. The ability to create their own universe is important for children. For example, children can be the teacher instead of the student. They can research a tropical jungle while surrounded by stuffed lions and stuffed tigers. With the creativity to impersonate and create their own scenario's, children can explore future interests or even future careers. Children who play together, whether they are jumping rope or having fun with that stuffed tiger have to set ground rules and boundaries as they pretend in order to share a world. In this way, children learn how to depend on and interact with each other.

Remember, playing is very vital to the development of a child. Play teaches them how to cope with the world, learn how to interact with others and be more creative. The occasional video game is fine, but we should make sure children learn the basics of play. And we can help do this by joining in the fun. Whether we decide to play the damsel in distress or the monster that's chasing them around, we can be a part of the play and development. Remember, these memories will be cherished far more than any television show or video game.
