When I was growing up in the south-east of England, the most desirable toy for most boys and some girls was a Dinky Toy - 1/43rd scale diecast model cars. I started to collect them in the late 1950s. At that time most Dinky Toy cars were 2/6d (Two shillings and six pence - about 25 cents in US money) and they came in a distinctive yellow box. They had actually been around since the early 1930s originally called "Modelled Miniatures" and intended mainly for use around train sets, the BIG boys' toy of the time, but they took on a life of their own and were manufactured in both England and France for many years.

For me their heyday was the fifties and sixties. Compared to today's top of the range diecast cars, they were, let's admit, pretty basic. No windows, no interiors, no 'suspension', no steering, but to me they were the most prized and sought after toy of all!

With television in its infancy in the fifties in the UK and much of the programming being bought from America, the appeal of flashy American cars seen in cop shows and films, as opposed to the rather more staid Hillmans and Austins of the UK was reflected in the choice of Dinky Toys I would spend my hard-earned pocket money on.

The Dinky Toys Dodge Royal, the Plymouth Plaza, the Hudson Commodore were all cars that any self-respecting boy had to own! But there were other models that were also a must - the Observation Coach (bus) for example, with its weird looking upper deck was a favorite of mine.

Gradually Dinky Toys added new features, under competition from other makes, like Corgi Toys. First were plastic windows, then gradually seats were put in, 'independent suspension' for all four wheels became all the rage , and finally steering. All these new features were seized upon with glee by me and my friends!

But the days of the Dinky Toy were numbered and in the seventies the end was near, brought on partly by competition from the new Hot Wheels, and although several attempts were made by new owners to revive the famous Dinky Toys name, they are now long since defunct.

Collectors though still seek out the toys and a good mint condition toy, preferably with mint condition box, can change hands for enormous sums. Dinky Toys, even in play-worn condition, are one of the best sellers on eBay.

I will never have a full collection - some are so rare that if one ever surfaces it will be way beyond my pocket, but I will always be on the lookout for a good condition Dinky.

HELP! VINTAGE 1980's TOY THAT NEEDS TO BE IDENTIFIED! details inside?

I recently went to a grage sale and bought an adorable dog plush toy for a little kid. The tag says Mattel Inc. 1985, but otherwise, I cannot identify the name of this dog. He is a brown dog with large, dark brown ears. He has a little pink heart sewn onto his chest, right where his heart would be. He has a battery pack inside his head, and there are button inside both ears, both arms, his tail and both feet. Whe you press either the tail or either ear, he says "Ow! It hurts, it hurts!". When you press his feet he begins to laugh and says "HeeHeeHee This tickles!" and when you press his hand he says "I'm a good buddy (or bunny, its unclear), I'm you huggy"
I have searched everywhere online for some clue as to what this dog is. If you have any idea, please let me know! I will post a picture soon.

It's a 1950's Horsman doll, It looks like the Perthy doll, so you can look up the picture for it. Also, it's hair is missing, (I mean all of it) and it's left hand has been chewed off by a dof from my aunt's. Still, it's in pretty good condition. How much would it be worth?

I have a 1963 Barbie and Midge box set in the original black case. Included in the set is a number of outfits, of many different styles, as well as a mink real mink coat for Barbie. Neither of the dolls have shoes, but they are in good condition (no damage, but clearly have been used)
I was wondering if anyone had any idea how much this set may be worth because I can't seem to find much information regarding this set elsewhere on the internet.

If you have a doll shop in your area, you might see if they can give you an idea of the value. Keep in mind that values can vary a lot when it comes to dolls.

You can also check ebay for auctions of Vintage Barbie items. There are other auction sites, but none of them are as popular as ebay.

The value can vary widely, depending on condition. What one person sees as good condition, another may see as poor condition.

Some of the things collectors look for are:

Hair in good shape, not missing any plugs, not been cut or restyled.

Do the dolls have their original lip & nail color?

Are there missing fingers, toes & are the ears clean? Many vintage dolls have green staining on their ears from the metal earrings reacting to the vinyl heads.

Collecting these early Barbies is a fascinating hobby and finds can be made in garage sales,flea markets and second hand stores everywhere.The average person has no idea of what an early Barbie looks like or that it is worth quite a bit. If you want to collect early Barbies carry a magnifier with you. With this you can read the copyright date on the rear.

The dolls's condition is extremely important.A doll which is complete,undamaged and all original is desirable to collectors.If parts are missing or replaced this downgrades the doll considearbly. Any attempts to paint the doll will destroy much of its value.Better to leave the doll in faded condition as it is worth more than a painted doll. Some early Barbies were made from a plastic which fades to white as it ages. Don't ever try to restore the original color.

Collectors want premium dolls.These are all original,in excellent condition and in the original box or package.

An old Barbies ears will at times turn green. This is due to corrosion of the earrings and lowers the value of the doll. Limbs can turn brittle with age and break off. You will probably rummage through many boxes of dolls at garage sales and flea markets before you find a 1959 Barbie but they are out there and the thrill of the hunt is all part of the game. Barbie was first made in 1959 by Mattel and millions have been sold all over the globe since then. On March 9th 1959 Barbie was exhibited at the New York Toy Fair and that date is her official birthday. She wore a one piece black and white zebra striped swimsuit,high heel open toe shoes,hoop earrings and had white sunglasses with blue lenses. She has blonde or brunette hair pulled back in a ponytail and she has strongly arched eyebrows and white irises. She was made from a type of plastic which has faded to white over the years. If you find one of these dolls in good condition you have a collectors delight which is worth quite a bit of money. The exact value depends on the condition and completeness of the doll. Any missing parts or damage will lower the value substantially. This doll is known as the #1 Ponytail Barbie.

The #2 Ponytail Barbie is the same as #1 except that there is no copper tubing in the legs or holes in the feet. The pedestal was changed and made with extensions to support the doll.

The #3 Ponytail Barbie is the same as #2 but has different eyebrows and blue irises. She may have blue or brown eyeliner makeup.

The #4 Ponytail Barbie is made from a non fading plastic which retains it's flesh color. She has blue eyeliner makeup.

The #6 Ponytail Barbie was made from a new vinyl which does not develop a greasy appearance as it ages. Her lips and fingernails are a pinkish red rather than the previous bright red. She is clad in a red swimsuit and has open toe,red,shoes.

The #7 Ponytail Barbie was made in various different hair colors including brunette, titian,lemon blonde and ash blonde. Her lips and nails are coral red. This new edition was brought out in the 1962-1963 period and the markings became Midge TM copyright 1962/Barbie copyright 1958 by Mattel. Dolls with this new marking are often called the #7 Ponytail Barbie but many people still call them #6. Dolls made before the changeover in 1962 are scarcer and more valuable than the new edition.

Condition is undoubtedly the most important factor in putting a value on early Barbie dolls. Collectors want a doll which is clean,completely original and not damaged.Such a doll fetches top price. If the doll is in its original packaging,and in mint condition, it is a highly desirable collectors doll and will fetch a premium price. Dolls which have in any way been repaired,restored or repainted are worth less than those left in the faded original condition.

Help with Antique Bru Reproduction?

Just aquired 8 antique dolls including a vintage Madame Alexander and a very unique, beautiful looking doll with tattered, worn clothing. Upon closer inspection I realized that there was a tag attached to her clothing which read “Circle and Dot reproduction BRU doll, the original can be seen at the Dolls in Wonderland Museum in St. Augustine”. I am not too schooled on antique dolls, but this doll looks rather old, yet is in very good condition in spite of her age.

Who would have ever thought forty years ago that Barbie Dolls would still be such a popular item with little girls today? It seems as if these dolls are always in vogue. Many girls play with their Barbies so much it is amazing that they stay in one piece. Some of the older Barbie Dolls that remain in good condition bring big money from collectors and online auctions. Here are some of the things that you can do to make sure that your Barbie stays in the best shape possible and that she will last for a long time.

Like anything, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the same is true with collectors of these dolls. The true value is really dependent upon the person who is interested in the doll and what they are willing to pay for one. One of the things that goes a long way to determining the value of a Barbie is the hair. The hair used for Barbie and the hairstyles have been modified constantly for over four decades now. Taking care of a Barbie's hair is crucial to her maintaining value.

Even though a girl may not particularly care about what he Barbie is worth she will in most cases care about keeping her Barbie clean and looking pretty. This is one of the reasons that Barbie has remained such a timeless doll, her incredible beauty and exaggerated figure. So, even if the girl isn't concerned at all with keeping Barbie's hair in perfect condition for monetary reasons, she still wants it to look nice and like most dolls a Barbie's hair is the thing that is most likely to be damaged.

Keeping a Barbie's hair clean is an easy thing because you can shampoo it with regular shampoo. This makes it easy and fun because the doll can share the bathtub with the child and they can both have their hair washed at the same time. Just be sure that the water used on the hair isn't too hot because that can damage it. After shampooing and rinsing, a conditioner can be applied and the hair combed through to remove tangles. Be sure to never allow a blow dryer to be used, the heat can melt the doll. Now you have clean hair to play with any style any way you want.

Some little girls, particularly those who are very young, tend to want to use Barbie like a coloring book and will mark all over her. Most of these if they are just crayon or pencil can be easily cleaned up with soap and warm water. Also make sure that you don't use soaps that are dyed with color because that color can be transferred to the Barbie's skin. If a Barbie gets particularly dirty she can be cleaned with some Softscrub and a cotton ball, just use care around her face. One little tip that is good to remove magic marker or ink pen marks is Clearasil. Just apply a little on the affected are and let it dry, then scrape it off gently.

Are you a lover when it comes to collecting the greatest antique toys that are on the market today? There are many people all across the globe that love to have these all over their house either for themselves or too show when guests come. How can I tell a repro Patti Playpal from an original?

I have a Patti Playpal doll with cut hair, in good condition, but her arms are a bit soft, like vinyl. Is this original or a repro? Did the original have rock-hard arms or were they squeezable? Thanks so much!
