There are two things to remember when you are looking to buy dolls online - firstly, there's a difference between buying antique dolls and modern dolls online.

Modern dolls such as the the Barbie collection can be easily purchased online and generally are pretty durable to be sent through postal or direct delivery means. On the other hand, antique dolls can be a bit of a challenge if you're buying them online especially as they compass a long history and different types have there own uniqueness especially in the clothing department.

In recent years, buying dolls online over platforms such as Ebay has become extremely popular and the great thing to keep in mind is that while pricing will determine overall purchase, buying online has some big advantages than going to a physical outlet and making a purchase. The emphasis is on deals and dolls deals online are big business. More importantly, you as the buyer can be in a strong position to grab a great deal especially if you're following auctions.

There are basically two types of doll enthusiasts - those who revel in the enjoyment of enjoying eras gone by with antique doll collecting and those who are more modern orientated or people buying for kids.

Buying Antique Dolls Tips

Here's a few things to keep in mind when buying an antique doll. These tips can save you a lot of frustration.

#1. Because they are older there is always a concern that they may be hiding some issues. Things to look for include cracks which can put a dampener on your purchase. Especially look for hairline cracks.

#2. If you are buying the doll physically then ask that you can remove things like the hair so you can check beneath. Always remove the body or ask the seller to do it for you. This only makes sense because when you're looking at shelling out hundreds of dollars you want to make sure your purchase isn't flawed.

#3.
Make sure the doll is original if that's what it has been advertised as. This can be difficult to check online and that's why buying through platforms such as Ebay are great in that you are protected in many areas from purchasing a dud.

#4. Also, buying the complete original doll and by complete we mean it has it's original clothing intact can be important. It depends how badly you want it but inexperienced collectors should be aware that replacing parts and clothing can be expensive. It's almost like buying new parts for a motor vehicle - they always seem to be priced over the top.

If a doll collector is looking for antique German dolls, chances are she is on a lookout for a Handwerck.

These antique German dolls have large almond shape eyes that are said to be the best and most prominent features. It may have a French appearance but it has good quality because it is made from the best materials.

Antique German dolls such as the Handwerck were manufactured in 1876. This continued til the early 1900s. The Handwerck manufacturing company was owned by Kammer & Reinhardt after the original owner Heinrich Handwerck passed away in 1902.

The Handwerck is found on a ball. This is the composition for the body which Handwerck made as he was constructing the doll. Doll companies purchase the bodies and the parts of the dolls that they are constructing from other manufacturers nowadays.

Therefore, a collector must have a keen eye and determine which are the original authentic parts of antique German dolls and which aren't. As much as possible, they want to collect dolls that are unmarked. They want the dolls they invest in to come from original antique German dolls parts.

Collectors know that there are a lot of “doll hospitals” during the manufacturing of the antique German dolls. If there is a paper sticker on any part of the doll, then these might have been obtained on a hospital repair visit.

This does not make the doll less desirable for any collectors. Collecting it is still a trend but those true blue collectors want their dolls to be as authentic as possible.

In fact, businessmen made profits by buying then selling antique German dolls and there is a difference in pricing when the dolls are authentic and when these dolls have stickers. The average doll collector prefers those attic finds.

They don't want any modern restoration facilities doing something t the antique German dolls because these would make it modernized and not antique.

The hype on collecting antique German dolls has even hit eBay. Most collectors check out the values and prices of the dolls that are sold online.

They compare and check whether these dolls are authentic antique German dolls or they have parts from other construction companies making these less authentic.

There are some collectors who remove the non-original bisque parts of their antique German dolls and continue to scour stores and online sites in search for the original parts so that they could replace these.

Since the doll is connected to a ball, there are chances wherein the stringing cord is already black with dust and can no longer be used but this is what those die hard collectors prefer.

I've got a pain in my sawdust, that's what's the matter with me. What book was this line from?

I know it was on CSI for the miniture killer.
But I also heard it's from a book.

a little bisque doll and a little rag doll
and a dolly imported from france
were seated one day on the shelf of a store
with a doll that could wind up and dance
when all of a sudden the shopkeeper heard
a scream that rang out through the store
and this is the plaint of the little bisque doll
that caused such an awful uproar
oh ive got a pain in my sawdust
thats whats the matter with me
somethings wrong with my little insides
i'm just as sick as can be!

Anyone know what book it's from?

Those are the lyrics to an old popular song from the turn of the last century.

You can find the complete lyrics on the Wiki

Dolls can be babies or high fashion models, sweet little girls or vampish sirens. There are almost as many kind of dolls as there are collectors, so whether you find yourself lingering amongst the pink boxes of the Toys 'R' Us doll department or gazing at the magazine photos of lifelike Ashton-Drake baby dolls, if you're reading this article you're probably thinking you'd like to start a doll collection.

Where to start?

First of all, collecting dolls can be an expensive hobby, so be sure you know where your "dolly dollars" are going to come from. Many doll collectors support their hobby by sewing, knitting, or crocheting doll clothes to sell, either on ebay, a Website, or at craft fairs. Dolls can be like potato chips -- it's impossible to just have one -- so be aware of your budget and space restrictions. You might not want dolls taking over your home!

Second, think about what kind of dolls you're attracted to. Some collectors are eclectic and like to own many different types of dolls. Others prefer to specialize in one main type, such as baby dolls or fashion dolls, while still other choose to concentrate on one brand or line. So while one collector may own several Barbies, a Ginny, a Madame Alexander doll, a few antique porcelain dolls, and a reborn baby doll, another may own Barbies, Genes, Kitty Colliers, and even a few Bratz, and yet another collector may choose to own only Sasha dolls. In short, no two doll collectors -- or collections -- are alike, and each doll collection is a unique expression of its owner's tastes.

If you're not familiar with all the different types and lines of dolls out there, the best thing to do is a lot of research. The Internet has really revolutionized doll collecting and is a seemingly endless source of information on the hobby. Many brick-and-mortar doll shops are also online, but many shops are Internet-only. Read, read, read -- pore over the doll magazines and thumb through collectors guidebooks. Look at lots of photos and read lots of descriptions to see what interests you. It's important, if you can, to attend a doll show or visit a doll shop to see dolls in person -- seeing dolls "in the flesh" is very different from seeing them in photos, and you may find yourself surprised to be pulled toward a doll at a show that you hadn't looked at twice online.

A doll show will expose you to a wide variety of dolls. You'll see, of course, the popular vinyl fashion dolls like Robert Tonner's Kitty Collier, Tyler Wentworth, and Betsy McCall, but you'll also see vintage Barbie and Ken dolls, as well as dolls by the venerable older companies like Effanbee and Madame Alexander. You'll see antique French and German dolls, play dolls, American Girl dolls, Bleuette, and even paper dolls. Take it all in -- this is your education.

Once you're ready to start purchasing dolls, the doll show and the brick-and-mortar doll shop are great places to begin, but the Internet has taken hold as a wonderful resource for doll collectors. Browse ebay for deals, but depending upon the dolls you want to own, you may want to gravitate toward online shops. Building a relationship with a doll dealer can work well for a collector, as once the dealer gets to know you and your collecting interests, she can let you know when something comes in that she knows you want.

If you've done your homework, you'll have a sense of what to pay for your dolls. New dolls' prices are often fixed, and it can be hard to get a bargain, but if you're buying dolls on ebay or elsewhere on the secondary market, you may be able to get some good deals.

It's exciting to bring your first doll home, and you may find that you want to share the fun with other collectors. Look for doll clubs in your area -- the United Federation of Doll Clubs http://www.ufdc.org can help steer you toward a local club. Also check Yahoo Groups http://groups.yahoo.com to see if there is a doll collecting group that appeals to you. These online discussion groups can be excellent sources of information and friendship.

As a doll collector, you can learn about fashion, history, and culture, but above all, you should just have fun!

Florence Bassett is a writer and doll collector, specializing mainly in Sasha dolls, Heidi Ott dolls, and Bleuette reproduction dolls.

Does anyone know where to find a porcelain doll called the Apache teardrop, I think it is Ashton Drake?

I know it is a young indian girl kneeling with her hands up, draped in her hands is a necklace with the sacred Apache teardrop on it, I know it was released a few years ago but am not sure which company released it, might be ashton drake or franklin mint. I am not entirely sure if that is the actual name of the doll or not, any help would be dearly appreciated

You can get it here for $65 :-)

The Horsman doll name is the oldest in America. The doll company was established in 1865.

The Horsman Company imported and distributed sporting goods, novelties, games, toys and German dolls for the first 40 years the company was in existence. It was not a doll producer.

The Horsman Company began manufacturing dolls in the early 20th Century when Horsman's son, Edward Jr. joined the family company. Edward Jr. was the designer and artist of the company, while his father was the business manager. The Horsman Company soon began selling a great number of American-made composition dolls, which were much unlike dolls the Old World produced.

Unfortunately, Edward Jr. died in his 40s in 1918. His father ran the company after the death of his son, but he too died in 1927. The Horsman Doll Company fell into deep financial problems, and ownership of the company began to pass into different hands. This was something that would happen over and over again in the history of the company.

In 1933, when ownership passed into new hands, the company recreated itself to keep up with the changing times. The new owner now was Regal Dolls. The Regal Doll Company was a small company. The company had a large factory in Trenton, New Jersey when they acquired the near-bankrupt Horsman Doll Company and brought it back to life. In the beginning, this company made dolls under the Regal and Horsman names. The Horsman brand name soon proved to be more popular and the Regal Company changed their brand name to "Horsman."

During the 1930s and 1940s, the Horsman Doll Company was a huge success. Their focus was upon moderately priced, yet high quality, well-dressed baby dolls. The company used no fancy names, or high powered marketing gimmicks. They just produced beautiful baby dolls little girls could love.

During World War II the serious shortage of materials for toy factories lead the Horsman Doll Company to use what materials were available for medical supplies, soft vinyl prostheses and artificial hands for the war veterans in need of such items. However, they did continue making some dolls.

After the war years Horsman used its wartime vinyl experience to start producing dolls made of firm plastic. Although Horsman was the not the first doll company to use vinyl in 1947, it was the first to use vinyl extensively. This was another important milestone in the history of the Horsman Doll Company. They became highly successful at producing the vinyl dolls in extremely large quantities.

Today, the Mattel Toy Company employs approximately 25,000 people worldwide. Their vision is to be the world’s premier toy brands – today and tomorrow.

The famous Mattel Toy Company: How did it all begin?

Ruth and Elliot Handler and Harold “Matt” Matson started a new company named Mattel in 1945. They started this company out of a garage workshop in Southern California. Their first Mattel products were picture frames.

Elliot developed a side business in dollhouse furniture made from the picture frame scraps. Harold Matson sold out to his partners, Ruth and Elliot Handler. The Handlers experienced great success with their doll furniture business and turned the companyÂ’s focus to toys.

In 1947, the first in a line of musical toys was produced. It was the Uke-A-Doodle.

In 1955, Mattel began advertising their toys through the Mickey Mouse Club television show and introduced another extremely successful toy call the “Burp Gun.” The Burp Gun was an automatic cap gun based on a patented mechanism.

Barbie is born:

In 1959 the ever so popular Barbie made her debut. Barbie was inspired by Ruth Handler’s daughter’s fascination with cutout paper dolls. She was a doll in which little girls could play out their dreams. The name “Barbie” is after Ruth Handler’s daughter, Barbara’s nickname.

Ken was introduced in 1961. Ken was BarbieÂ’s only boyfriend, and named for the HandlerÂ’s son, Ken. Soon Barbie and Ken were joined by friends of the Midge doll in 1936 and Skipper in 1965.

Christie, an African-American doll was introduced in 1968. Christie was the first of many ethnic friends of Barbie that included Theresa in 1988 and Kira in 1990.

Ruth and Elliot Handler, founders of Mattel, left the company in 1975.

Candy Fashion Dolls

The Candy Fashion dolls were originally produced in 1962, and reintroduced by Charisma, Marie Osmond’s company in January of 2006. In the 1960’s, Candy Fashion dolls were “the dream of every girl.” They could be found in supermarkets across the country, and were best known as having “the most exquisite clothing.” Candy Fashion dolls came with four complete ensembles and matching accessories.

The Charisma Company has faithfully reproduced the original dolls using more quality materials to last for generations of enjoyment and stylish play. Charisma has also created a replica of the vintage box to display Candy and her four original fashions that include mannequin stands and accessories.

Annalee Mobilitee Dolls, Inc.

Annalee Thorndike made her first doll as a young girl in 1934. Doll making was her hobby. She turned the hobby into a commercial enterprise in the early 1950Â’s. Annalee selected a theme and created a collection of dolls surrounding that theme. Today, the Annalee Mobilitee Dolls Company has become one of the countryÂ’s premier makers of collectible dolls.

Annalee is known best for her pose sable dolls that feature a variety of mice, bears, rabbits, and other stuffed animals, along with human figures. Her line of collectibles are about everyday events and occupations, seasons such as Christmas, ValentineÂ’s Day, Irish Celebration, Spring, Halloween and Harvest Days.

Ginny Dolls

The Ginny dolls represent a great American tradition and go back to the year of 1922. Jennie Adler Graves established Ye Olde Vogue Doll Shop in her home in Somerville, Massachusetts. The story behind her start is of a friend, who knew Jennie’s skill in sewing children’s clothes, and asked her to dress some dolls for a charity event. Jennie did not know the “friend” was actually selling the dolls rather than giving them to charity. Soon, Jennie Graves began dressing and selling imported German dolls to Jordan Marsh, which was a well-known Boston department store.

Jennie Graves was extremely successful until 1948. A sales dip in her line of existing dolls inspired Mrs. Graves to introduce an 8” plastic doll, the forerunner to Ginny. Department store owners and consumers all loved the new doll. In 1951, Ginny was official, and named after Jennie’s daughter Virginia. The doll Ginny was so popular that many tried to copy her. By 1957, Ginny had reached over five million dollars per year in sales, and was a dear staple in most American households.

Mrs. Graves retired from the company in 1960. There began a series of management and ownership changes. Ginny underwent some difficult years of change.

In 1995, the “New” Vogue Doll Company pledged to restore Ginny to her deserved place in the world of modern dolls. Ginny, the engaging little girl of the 1950’s and known best for her love of fashion and fun attitude once again rises in the limelight of fine collectible dolls.

I am looking for simple german doll clothes for a 2nd grade school project. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The doll that I will be dressing is made from a clothespin.

I love doing miniature anything! You can make the cutest little 'lederhosen' (the leather shorts with suspenders) out of tan felt. Use fabric paint to make dots to represent the little design on the band that goes across the chest between the two suspender straps. Put a green dot on either side of a red dot, the draw the green dots out sideways with a toothpick. It'll look like a floral patttern. Make him a little white shirt and felt hat, too, if you have time. Go to Google images and look for "lederhosen" or "Oktoberfest" or "Tyrolean" or even "German dolls." Black and white felt will make cute socks and shoes.

For the girl doll, make a white blouse and a bright-colored jumper with a poofy full skirt. Decorate the edge of the skirt and across the chest with your fabric paint. Use yellow yarn to give her blond braids. Again, Google images can help. You can also type in "traditional German costume" if the other three suggestions don't give you the picture you need.

The word authentic is often connected to expensive, but this is a misconception. True if you collect antique baby dolls, these could be pricey. Well, it depends on the kind of doll that you want. There are some antique dolls that can be bought for only a few hundreds of dollars.

If you're lucky, you may even get these for less. Here is a list of some that can be obtained by collectors on a tight budget. These are great dolls with good quality and good history behind them.

One example is the Armand Marseille. These are antique German dolls that is said to be one of the best antique baby dolls on the market today. They are extremely common which some collectors believe make it a non-rarity but there are still other collectors who go for these kinds of antique dolls.

Just with all the manufacturers of authentic German dolls, there are Armand Marseille dolls that have been restored. Collectors who buy antique baby dolls specifically the Armand Marseille make sure that the dolls they get have authentic parts. These are pricey though but there are Armand Marseille dolls that can be purchased below $500.

Another popular antique baby dolls for collectors are the Kestner Shoulderhead Dolls. These are well loved and popular German made bisque dolls. The rarer the Kestner Shoulderhead Doll is, the more expensive it is.

If the collector is on a budget, there is still another option for them. They can look for the lovely shoulderheaded versions and buy these instead. Though the classic trademark of the Kestner Shoulderhead Dolls have their mouths open. The less pricey antique baby dolls of this kind have their mouths closed.

Collectors also pay close attention to the features, painting, and the material of the Kestner Shoulderhead Dolls. These should be made of bisque which make it really authentic.

The third most popular antique baby dolls for collectors are the antique dollhouse dolls. These are made from papier mache, wax, wood, bisque, and china. They are small and the models of the bisque dolls vary.

The best thing about this doll is that a lot of collectors do their best to get their hands on these kinds of antique baby dolls therefore they are vastly produced. They are also cheaper compared to the other dolls because these can be bought for $200 to $300.

The German toddler dolls were manufactured in the 1900s and were originally display dolls. Nowadays, these are considered to be antique baby dolls for collectors. They usually come with a rocking chair or an old cradle.

I am trying to find about three dolls my husband purchased from an estate auction? Can you help?

Apparently two of them are Yolanda Bello "picture perfect dolls" and the other is a german bisque doll, early century.
Thank you for your response. I will add pictures. My collection of dolls are quite voluminous and I am looking to downsize.

Pics would really help. German bisque are often quite valuable. The Bello dolls are most likely quite mass produced and not worth as much. But I'd need pics and more info. to really get you an accurate price.
