Generally, an overcoat is worn during cold weather. An overcoat is also called as jacket which can be worn over a suit, casual business wear or for weddings, parties, etc. Many people have various questions on mind like should they buy single or double breasted overcoat and the type of fabric. Before buying an overcoat you have to remember certain things.
1. Length:
It would be better if you choose a full length or a 3/4 length overcoat.
Full length:
Longer overcoats are mostly preferred by older men. Full length jackets mostly suit taller men rather than shorter ones. Make sure that longer jackets fall around the lower level of your shins, which is perfect for colder winter days. Major disadvantage being lower part of the overcoat might get dirty when snow starts melting.
3/4 length:
A 3/4 length overcoat is mostly preferred by younger people. This type of overcoat can mold your body perfectly. This type of overcoat should fall anywhere between the lower part of your knee and lower part of your trousers pockets.
2. Type of overcoat:
Double-breasted:
In a double breasted overcoat, you have to lap one edge of the front well over the other. You can find four and six button double breasted overcoats.Double breasted overcoats have matching belts, which can be tied around your waist.
Single-breasted:
Single breasted closes with a narrow overlap and fastens down in front with a single row of buttons. Single breasted overcoats are available in three or four buttons. This type of overcoat can be worn open and you don't have to button it up.
3. Fabrics:
The most preferred fabric for jacket is cashmere wool. This type of wool is warm and rich looking.
4. Cuts:
Make sure that your overcoat fits squarely around your shoulders and waist.
5. Details:
Good looking overcoats have retractable lining. Zip it on during cold weather and zip it off during winter. Do check the pockets, lapel's style and also is there a vent in the back. Pockets look nice whether they're at the waist, hip or chest level. You can choose a lapel that is classic, long, exaggerated and wide spaced lapel.
A fine quality overcoat will cost you anywhere between $500 and $5000.
Before selecting an overcoat do remember following things. Overcoat is very important during winter climate. Find out how much time you spend outside working or walking and is your wardrobe full of suits or casual clothes. Look into the fabrics. Go in for wool. Always choose a size that fits and looks good but allows for layers underneath. Prefer classic overcoat style. Go in for pockets. It is very important that you have inside and outside of the pocket. Always choose a neutral, dark color. During winter climate, you can choose a color that doesn't show dirt.
