When I was growing up in the south-east of England, the most desirable toy for most boys and some girls was a Dinky Toy - 1/43rd scale diecast model cars. I started to collect them in the late 1950s. At that time most Dinky Toy cars were 2/6d (Two shillings and six pence - about 25 cents in US money) and they came in a distinctive yellow box. They had actually been around since the early 1930s originally called "Modelled Miniatures" and intended mainly for use around train sets, the BIG boys' toy of the time, but they took on a life of their own and were manufactured in both England and France for many years.

For me their heyday was the fifties and sixties. Compared to today's top of the range diecast cars, they were, let's admit, pretty basic. No windows, no interiors, no 'suspension', no steering, but to me they were the most prized and sought after toy of all!

With television in its infancy in the fifties in the UK and much of the programming being bought from America, the appeal of flashy American cars seen in cop shows and films, as opposed to the rather more staid Hillmans and Austins of the UK was reflected in the choice of Dinky Toys I would spend my hard-earned pocket money on.

The Dinky Toys Dodge Royal, the Plymouth Plaza, the Hudson Commodore were all cars that any self-respecting boy had to own! But there were other models that were also a must - the Observation Coach (bus) for example, with its weird looking upper deck was a favorite of mine.

Gradually Dinky Toys added new features, under competition from other makes, like Corgi Toys. First were plastic windows, then gradually seats were put in, 'independent suspension' for all four wheels became all the rage , and finally steering. All these new features were seized upon with glee by me and my friends!

But the days of the Dinky Toy were numbered and in the seventies the end was near, brought on partly by competition from the new Hot Wheels, and although several attempts were made by new owners to revive the famous Dinky Toys name, they are now long since defunct.

Collectors though still seek out the toys and a good mint condition toy, preferably with mint condition box, can change hands for enormous sums. Dinky Toys, even in play-worn condition, are one of the best sellers on eBay.

I will never have a full collection - some are so rare that if one ever surfaces it will be way beyond my pocket, but I will always be on the lookout for a good condition Dinky.

HELP! VINTAGE 1980's TOY THAT NEEDS TO BE IDENTIFIED! details inside?

I recently went to a grage sale and bought an adorable dog plush toy for a little kid. The tag says Mattel Inc. 1985, but otherwise, I cannot identify the name of this dog. He is a brown dog with large, dark brown ears. He has a little pink heart sewn onto his chest, right where his heart would be. He has a battery pack inside his head, and there are button inside both ears, both arms, his tail and both feet. Whe you press either the tail or either ear, he says "Ow! It hurts, it hurts!". When you press his feet he begins to laugh and says "HeeHeeHee This tickles!" and when you press his hand he says "I'm a good buddy (or bunny, its unclear), I'm you huggy"
I have searched everywhere online for some clue as to what this dog is. If you have any idea, please let me know! I will post a picture soon.

Since bursting onto the toy market in a black and white swimsuit on March 9 1959, Barbie has certainly made her mark and is undoubtedly queen amongst dolls even after more than forty years of life.

Created by Ruth Handler and marketed by the Mattel toy company, Barbie has successfully moved with the times for almost five decades adopting changing fashions to maintain her place as the top toy doll brand. From nurse and olympic Barbie to president and married Barbie, she has an impressive resume with more than eighty careers and countless costume changes along the way.

As the American dream personified, Barbie has led a very privileged life that most celebrities would envy even today. With a wardrobe to die for, a fleet of cars and even a bespoke swimming pool just some of the trappings of world wide domination and fame. But many collectors are concerned that her days as queen of dolls may be about to end. In 2007, Barbie is still a big fish in a growing pond but now faces stiff competition from new, fresh and energetic doll brands like Bratz which have successfully diversified into multimedia and continue to sell well.

And it appears that Barbie is responding to her competitors with smaller versions of the traditional doll called Barbie Mini Kingdom. At just 6 inches tall this gentle change of direction may be the tip of the iceberg as Mattel moves to strengthen it's position.

As she approaches her 50th birthday, Barbie remains an international phenomenon sold in over 40 countries and a sought after collectors item. As you might expect, Barbie is the best selling doll on Ebay with some rare early examples fetching as much as $10,000. So, for now, Barbie is certainly worthy of a place in any toy collectors catalog, but only time will tell if Barbie dolls can continue to move with the times and maintain their appeal with young girl's on into the 21st century. Even so, I wouldn't like to bet against a Barbie doll being at the top of many Christmas lists in twenty years time.

I'm sorry, but I just looked through the Chopin preludes. And out of those one-page ones (am not going to talk about the longer ones), maybe 2 or 3 can be considered intermediate level. Given what you've worked on, the rest of them would be too hard - maybe not in terms of notes, rather it's the emotional content and the musical maturity required that's difficult to pull off. (Chopin is hardly ever easy to play well)

But that's ok, you can still look at other pieces. You can try some of the simpler Bach two-part inventions. The C major, F major and G major ones, for example, would be quite perfect for you.

Generally, an overcoat is worn during cold weather. First order of business is to take Careen to England for a stay to "improve her health" and hopefully save the family from a highly explosive scandal. With plans on dealing with Wilkerson upon her return, Scarlett is once more found to be just as beautiful, and ambitious, but also sensitive and smart when needed for the sake of her family.

Scarlett returns from England after much tragedy both at home and abroad and once again uses her cunning ways to deal with the repetitive misunderstandings of her relationship with Ashley, her feelings for Belle Watlin and her son Luke, the disaster waiting to happen with Jonas Wilkerson, and most importantly, Rhett. Seeing Rhett in England and again upon return just reinforces Scarlett's love and determination to get him back. As much as she would like to think about things "another day", Scarlett is forced to act to protect all that she loves and holds dear and in doing so, endangers her own life as well as those of others.

Katherine Pinotti has taken up where Gone With the Wind left off and weaves a sequel that is believable as well as highly enjoyable. Ms. Pinotti's book is an exciting read and enjoyable continuation of these much loved characters. The ending keeps you wondering if things will finally conclude the way a Tara fan would want.
